Securing global trade: how container and vehicle inspection strengthens port security
Ports are more than gateways for goods. They are frontline hubs in the fight against drug trafficking, smuggling, theft and terrorism. Millions of containers and trucks pass through European terminals every year, and every one of them could hide contraband. The challenge for port security is to inspect more, and more accurately, without slowing down trade.
The figures show how urgent that is. In the first half of 2026, Dutch Customs seized 19,332 kilos of cocaine, 20% more than in the same period of 2025, and the Port of Rotterdam remains a major hub for cocaine smuggling. In this article, we explain how modern container and vehicle inspection helps ports stay ahead.
Why port security is under pressure
Criminal organisations constantly adapt their methods. Dutch Customs describes several of them:
- Rip-offs: drugs are hidden in sports bags placed inside otherwise legitimate containers.
- Drop-offs: packages are thrown overboard from large ships and collected by smaller, faster boats.
- Concealment in the cargo itself: larger shipments are increasingly hidden inside the goods, for example in machine parts.
- Chemical concealment: drugs are processed into other materials, which calls for new detection methods.
Manual inspections cannot keep pace with these methods and volumes. That is why Customs has commissioned a study into the feasibility of scanning containers immediately on arrival in the Port of Rotterdam.
Non-intrusive inspection: looking inside without opening
Cargo and vehicle inspection systems use high-energy X-ray to look inside containers and trucks without opening them. This is called non-intrusive inspection. Instead of unloading a container, officers see its contents on screen within moments.
Dual-energy imaging adds an important layer. It distinguishes between organic, inorganic and mixed materials and shows them in different colours. This helps officers spot drugs hidden between machine parts or other dense cargo, where the shape alone would not reveal anything.
The right scanner for each part of the port
Every location in a port has different needs. That is why our range includes several types of systems:
- Gate lanes with high volumes: the NUCTECH FS6000 fast-scan system lets drivers drive through the scanning tunnel without stopping, with a throughput of up to 200 vehicles per hour.
- In-depth inspection of high-risk containers: fixed inspection systems use the most powerful X-ray sources in our range. The FG9000DT combines X-ray with CT scanning of suspicious areas, which reduces the need for manual unpacking.
- Sites with limited space: portal inspection systems offer precise screening of containers, trucks and vans with a compact footprint.
- Flexible capacity: mobile and relocatable scanners can be moved to where they are needed most, as we explained in our article on mobile scanning solutions for border control.
Ports also need to check for radioactive material. Radiation monitoring systems for vehicles can be placed in the same lanes, so this check does not require a separate stop.
Smarter inspection with AI and connected systems
A scan is only as good as its interpretation. AI inspection systems analyse images in real time, highlight suspicious areas and reduce false alarms. This supports officers in making faster and better decisions, as described in our article on deep learning for the detection of hazardous substances.
Integration makes the process even stronger. Our systems can be connected to licence plate recognition, container code recognition, under-vehicle surveillance and radioactivity monitoring. All information comes together in one inspection record, which can be linked to port and customs systems.
And when a scan shows something suspicious that cannot be identified on the image, handheld trace detection and Raman spectroscopy can identify the substance on the spot.
Security and trade flow go hand in hand
Port security is not only about catching criminals. Ports that combine reliable inspection with smooth logistics also build trust with shipping lines, traders and international partners. A secure port is an attractive port. By choosing the right mix of systems, scanning can become a fixed part of the logistics flow instead of a bottleneck.
